Business networking is, for innumerable business types, the most effective form of marketing. "People buy from people" and, more particularly, from people they have developed a relationship with.
However, the key element of business networking is contacts - the concept of "selling THROUGH the room and
not TO the room". So many business people attend a networking event and come out saying "I didn't sell anything - it was a waste of time".
Finding themselves talking, for instance, to a bank manager, their
thought process was "I already have a bank manager, so he doesn't need me and I don't need him".
How much better the outcome could have been if they had thought "This bank manager has several hundred clients - there must be many that could be my clients, or my suppliers, or people I could
collaborate with to provide a more holistic service".
